❀ Question:

What is the ruling of Islam on the use of amulets (taʿwīdh)? The hadith declares the wearing of tamīmah as shirk. What exactly is meant by tamīmah in this context? And does the use of taʿwīdh fall under the category of religious innovation (bid‘ah)?

Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allāh. To proceed:

Sharʿī Basis for Taʿwīdh (Amulets)

There is no authentic evidence from the life of the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ proving that he ever used or prescribed the use of amulets (taʿwīdh).

Likewise, no authentic narration from the Companions (ṣaḥābah) is found that establishes the practice of wearing or using amulets as part of their actions or recommendations.

Thus, the practice is not rooted in the Sunnah and lacks foundational basis in the earliest generations of Islam.

✿ Meaning of “Tamīmah”

The linguist and lexicographer, the author of Qāmūs, explains tamīmah in the following terms:

«وَالتَّمِيْمُ التَّامُ الْخَلْقِ وَالشَّدِيْدُ وَجَمْعُ تَمِيْمَةٍ كَالتَّمَائِمِ لِخَرَزَةِ رَقْطَاءٍ تُنْظَمُ فِی السَّيْرِ ثُمَّ يُعْقَدُ فِی الْعُنُقِ»

Translation:

"Tamīm refers to something complete in structure and strong. The plural of tamīmah is tamā’im. It refers to a speckled bead that is threaded onto a cord and then tied around the neck."

✿ Summary of the Islamic Ruling

The use of amulets (taʿwīdh) is not established from the Prophet ﷺ.
② The term tamīmah referred to objects (such as beads, stones, or inscriptions) that people used to wear around their necks, believing they provided protection or benefit.
③ The hadith declares such tamā’im to be shirk, because they involve attributing protection, harm, or benefit to something other than Allāh, which contradicts Tawḥīd.

The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said:

"مَن تَعَلَّقَ تَمِيمَةً فَقَدْ أَشْرَكَ"
"Whoever wears a tamīmah has committed shirk."
[Authentic Hadith]

❖ Important Note:

✦ Any object—whether it contains written text, symbols, or Qur’ānic verses—if it is worn with the belief that it itself brings benefit or repels harm, then this contradicts the core principle of Tawḥīd and falls under shirk.

✦ Even if a taʿwīdh contains only Qur’ānic verses, it remains problematic due to the absence of practice by the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, and it can lead to reliance on objects instead of du‘ā and direct trust in Allāh ﷻ.

✅ Conclusion:

◈ The use of taʿwīdh is not proven from the Prophet ﷺ.
Tamā’im were physical objects worn for protection—this practice is labeled as shirk in hadith when protection is sought from other than Allāh.
◈ The concept and use of taʿwīdh aligns with pre-Islamic superstitions and has no foundation in authentic Islamic teachings.
◈ Therefore, taʿwīdh may be classified under bid‘ah (religious innovation) or even shirk, depending on the belief associated with it.
