❖ Question:

Can a Muslim woman attend scholarly and jurisprudential gatherings held in mosques?

❖ Answer:

Yes, it is permissible for a woman to attend scholarly gatherings in the mosque, whether the subject is Fiqh of rulings (Fiqh al-Aḥkām) or Fiqh of creed and monotheism (Fiqh al-ʿAqīdah wa al-Tawḥīd).

However, the following conditions must be met:

① She must observe proper hijab.
② She must avoid wearing fragrance.
③ She should remain distant from men.
④ There must be no mixing with the opposite gender.

This is because the Prophet ﷺ said:

خير صفوف النساء آخرها و شرها أولها
[Narrated by Muslim 132 and Abu Dawood 97 in Kitab al-Salah]

"The best rows for women are the last ones, and the worst are the first ones."

This is due to the fact that the first row of women is closer to the men's rows, while the last row is farther and hence better in terms of modesty and separation.
