Islamic Duties of a Husband and the Rights of a Wife

❖ The Importance of the Husband-Wife Relationship in Islam

Author: Qari Usama bin Abdus-Salam (حفظه الله)

Islam emphasizes that the relationship between husband and wife must be based on love, respect, and justice. If a husband oppresses his wife or causes her physical or emotional harm, it is in direct violation of the principles of Shariah. The Qur’an, Prophetic traditions, and the sayings of the noble Companions (رضي الله عنهم) clearly denounce such injustice and highlight the protection of women's rights.

◈ Protection of Women's Rights

(Surah Al-Baqarah: 228)

This verse obliges men to deal justly with women and to fulfill their rights with equity and fairness.

④ Statements of the Scholars and Hadith Experts

◈ Imam Nawawi (رحمه الله):

"It is a husband’s duty to deal with his wife with love and gentleness. If he oppresses her, he becomes liable for accountability before Allah."
(Sharh Sahih Muslim)

Imam Ibn Qudamah (رحمه الله):

"If a husband is harsh or unjust with his wife, she has the right to seek justice from a Qadi (Islamic judge) and demand her rights."
(Al-Mughni, Vol. 7, Pg. 232)

The Rights of Women in Islam

Protection from Physical and Psychological Harm:
Islam commands that women be protected from all forms of harm. A husband is not permitted to cause undue suffering to his wife.

Right to Financial Support:
Women are entitled to financial maintenance, accommodation, and other necessities from their husbands. Neglecting these rights is against Shariah.

Right to Justice in Polygamy:
If a man has more than one wife, he must treat them all justly. Favoritism is a violation of Allah’s command.

Summary

Islam places a religious obligation upon the husband to treat his wife with love, gentleness, and justice. A husband who oppresses his wife becomes liable to divine accountability. The Qur’an, Hadith, and the teachings of scholars bind the husband to fulfill the rights of his wife and to uphold excellent conduct. Should he transgress, the wife has the full right to seek justice from an Islamic court.
