The Limit of Islamic Dress: Can Men Wear Trousers up to the Knees?
Source: Ahkam wa Masail, Vol. 01, in the light of Qur’an and Hadith, p. 506
❖ Question
Can a man wear trousers up to the knees? In Lahore, many students wear short trousers (nikkar). What is the proper length of Islamic dress for men?
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿAmma Baʿd!
From the ahadith of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it is clear that the correct and Sharʿi style of dress for a believing man is:
- The garment should begin from the middle of the shin (niṣf al-sāq).
- It should end above the ankles (fawqa al-kaʿbayn).
✿ Two extremes to avoid:
- Too short: Clothes restricted only to the knees (like nikkar) are against Sunnah and fall short of Sharʿi standards.
- Too long: Clothes hanging below the ankles are also against Sunnah and forbidden.
❖ Conclusion
The Sharʿi standard for men’s lower garment is from mid-shin down to just above the ankles. Wearing clothes up to the knees or letting them hang below the ankles—both are contrary to Sunnah and Sharʿi guidance.
