Is zakat due on vehicles used for personal use?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd:
➊ There is no zakat on vehicles used for personal use.
✔ In principle, any item that a person keeps for personal use — such as a vehicle, camel, or tractor — is not subject to zakat.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«لَيْسَ عَلَى الْمُسْلِمِ فِي عَبْدِهِ وَلَا فَرَسِهِ صَدَقَةٌ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Zakāh, Bāb: No Zakat on a Muslim’s Slave or Horse, Ḥadīth: 1464;
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-Zakāh, Bāb: No Zakat on a Slave or Horse, Ḥadīth: 982)
“There is no zakat upon a Muslim’s slave or his horse.”
This ḥadīth indicates that items held for personal utility are exempt from zakat.
➋ However, gold and silver jewelry are an exception.
✔ Even if they are kept for personal use, zakat is obligatory upon them.
✔ This is due to the specific rulings regarding gold and silver, which differ from other forms of personal property.
✔ Zakat is not due on privately owned vehicles used for personal or family needs.
✔ The exemption is based on clear prophetic instruction that personal-use items are not zakatable.
