Is Wudū Necessary for Sajdah al-Tilāwah? Clarified with Scholarly Consensus

❖ Is Wudū (Ablution) a Condition for Sajdah al-Tilāwah?

Source: Fatawa Ameenpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Ameenpuri

❖ Question:

Is performing wudū (ablution) a condition for Sajdah al-Tilāwah (Prostration of Recitation)?

❖ Answer:

Wudū is not a strict requirement for Sajdah al-Tilāwah.
However, it is recommended (mustaḥabb) to perform it while in a state of wudū.
The act of prostrating without wudū is permissible, though being in a state of purity is better and preferred.

❖ Scholarly Consensus:

Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله (d. 728 AH) stated:

"لكن سجودها على الطهارة أفضل باتفاق المسلمين."
"Performing Sajdah al-Tilāwah while in a state of purity (wudū) is better — and this is agreed upon by all Muslims."
(Al-Fatāwā al-Kubrā: 1/349)

✔ Summary:

✅ Wudū is not obligatory for Sajdah al-Tilāwah.
✅ Permissible without wudū, but doing it in wudū is preferred and more virtuous.
✅ This is supported by consensus of Muslim scholars.
