❖ Question:
Is it a Sharʿī requirement that the ihrām garments be white?
❖ Answer:
No, wearing white is not a condition (sharṭ) for ihrām, as there is no authentic Sharʿī evidence that makes the color white mandatory for ihrām garments.
However, white clothing is indeed preferable (afḍal), based on the general preference shown by the Prophet ﷺ for white garments.
"Wear white clothes, for they are among the best of your garments, and shroud your dead in them."
(Abū Dāwūd, Tirmidhī – ḥasan)
But when it comes specifically to ihrām, Islam does not restrict a man to any particular color, as long as the garments meet the conditions of ihrām — such as being free from stitching (for men), covering the ʿawrah properly, and being clean and permissible.
Conclusion:
◉ White is not a requirement for ihrām;
◉ It is recommended and preferable, not obligatory;
◉ Any color that does not resemble prohibited dress can be used for ihrām.
