❖ Question
"I am a student in an Islamic seminary. Most of the teachers here dislike wearing pants and shirts, and even consider them impermissible from an Islamic perspective. What is your opinion regarding this matter?”
❖ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿAmma Baʿd!
✿ General Ruling
Wearing pants and shirts has become a common global dress, used by both Muslims and non-Muslims.
Islam does not prescribe any specific dress style but provides principles of modesty and coverage that must be observed.
✿ Basic Islamic Guidelines for Clothing
According to Qur’an and Sunnah, clothing should:
- Be decent and presentable.
- Be loose and non-revealing.
- Completely cover the ʿawrah (private parts).
- Not be so tight that the body’s shape and structure are exposed.
These principles apply to both men and women.
✿ Pants, Shirts, Jeans, or Shalwar Qamees – Permissible When?
- They cover the ʿawrah properly.
- They are loose and not body-hugging.
- They do not highlight the body’s shape.
- The shirt is long enough to ensure proper coverage.
- The clothing is excessively tight.
- It reveals the body’s contours and shape.
- It fails to cover the ʿawrah properly.
❖ Conclusion
Wearing pants, shirts, or jeans is not inherently haram. The ruling depends on whether the Sharʿi conditions of modesty and covering are fulfilled. If these conditions are neglected, the clothing becomes impermissible, regardless of the type—pants, jeans, or even shalwar.
