❀ Shar‘i Rulings on the Fat (Charbi) of Ḥarām and Ḥalāl Dead Animals ❀
✦ Taken from: Fatāwā ʿUlamā’-e-Ḥadīth, Kitāb al-Ṭahārah, Vol. 1, p. 37
What is the Islamic ruling on using the fat of prohibited (ḥarām) animals in any form? And what is the ruling on using the fat of ḥalāl animals that have died without proper slaughter?
✔ Eating the fat of ḥarām animals or any dead animal (murdār) is explicitly prohibited.
✔ Using the fat in other forms (such as for burning or caulking boats) is a matter of scholarly difference.
It is narrated that:
Some people asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the fat of dead animals—“Can we use it for burning, oiling, or repairing ships, and can we sell it?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
"No."
(Reported in authentic Hadith collections)
This Hadith apparently shows prohibition of sale, but some scholars have extended the prohibition to both sale and usage.
However, the stronger and more correct opinion is that:
✔ Eating and selling is prohibited,
✔ But using it for non-consumable purposes like fuel or repair is permitted.
✔ The fat of a properly slaughtered ḥalāl animal is unanimously permissible for consumption and sale.
➤ Eating or selling this fat is impermissible (ḥarām).
➤ However, for other uses (like fuel or industrial purposes), scholars differ.
✔ The correct opinion is that such non-edible usage is permissible.
① Fat of ḥarām animals:
—
Eating = ḥarām
— ✔ Burning, repairs, etc. = Permissible
② Fat of dead ḥalāl animals (not slaughtered):
—
Eating & selling = ḥarām
— ✔ Burning, repairs, etc. = Permissible
③ Fat of slaughtered ḥalāl animals:
— ✔ Eating & selling = Halāl
