Hadith Evidence
1. ‘A’ishah (RA) – Prophet ﷺ usually sat while urinating
‘A’ishah (RA) said:
"Whoever tells you that the Prophet ﷺ used to urinate while standing, do not believe him. He would only urinate while sitting."
(Sahih Abi ‘Awanah 1/198, al-Mustadrak 1/181, al-Sunan al-Kubra of al-Bayhaqi 1/101, Musnad Ahmad 1/136, 192, 213)
2. Hudhayfah (RA) – Prophet ﷺ once urinated standing
Hudhayfah (RA) narrated:
"The Prophet ﷺ came to the garbage dump of some people and urinated there while standing."
(Sahih al-Bukhari 1/35)
Reconciliation of the Two Hadiths
- The Prophet ﷺ generally urinated sitting – this was his regular practice (Sunnah).
- On certain occasions, he urinated standing, as in the hadith of Hudhayfah (RA), due to specific circumstances such as the nature of the location.
Shar‘i Ruling
- Sunnah & Reward: Sitting while urinating is Sunnah and brings reward.
- Not a Sin: Standing while urinating is not sinful in itself.
- Condition: Whether sitting or standing, one must protect oneself from urine splashes. Neglecting this is sinful.
Warning from Hadith
Ibn ‘Abbas (RA) narrated: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by two graves and said:
"They are being punished, and they are not being punished for something major. One of them did not protect himself from urine, and the other used to spread gossip."
(Sahih al-Bukhari – Kitab al-Wudu, Bab ma ja’a fi ghasl al-bawl)
And the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Protect yourselves from urine."
Conclusion
- Best Practice: Sit while urinating – this is the Sunnah and more modest.
- Permissibility: Standing is allowed when needed, as long as splashes are avoided.
- Sinfulness: The real sin is failing to protect oneself from urine, regardless of posture.
