Is the Black Dog a Devil?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (Hafizahullah)

Answer:

Yes, it is mentioned in the Hadith that a specific type of black dog is referred to as a "devil."

Evidence from Hadith:

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (رضي الله عنهما) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded the killing of dogs. He said that even if a woman brought a dog from a village, they would kill it. Later, the Prophet (ﷺ) forbade the killing of all dogs but said:

عَلَيْكُمْ بِالْأَسْوَدِ الْبَهِيمِ ذِي النُّقْطَتَيْنِ، فَإِنَّهُ شَيْطَانٌ

"Target the pure black dog with two spots, for it is a devil."
(Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 1572)

Explanation:

The phrase "with two spots" refers to markings above the dog's eyes, which can be commonly observed.

Conclusion:

The Hadith emphasizes that the "pure black dog with two spots" is referred to as a "devil" and was specifically ordered to be killed, reflecting its distinction from other dogs within Islamic guidance.
