Is the Ḥadīth About Five Nights When Duʿāʾ is Not Rejected Authentic?

Source: Extracted from the book Aḥkām wa Masā’il: Kitāb wa Sunnat kī Roshnī Mein by Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī

❖ Question:

Abū Umāmah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“There are five nights in which duʿāʾ is not rejected:
① The first night of Rajab,
② The night of mid-Shaʿbān,
③ The night of Jumuʿah (Friday night),
④ The night of ʿĪd al-Fiṭr, and
⑤ The night of ʿĪd al-Aḍḥā.”
(Reported in Mukāshafat al-Qulūb)

Is this ḥadīth authentic?

❖ Answer:

The above narration attributed to Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī رضي الله عنه is found in:

  • Tārīkh Madīnah Dimashq (10/408)
  • Musnad al-Firdaws (2/199, ḥadīth no. 2975)

Ibn ʿAsākir narrates it with the chain:

Bandār ibn ʿAmr ibn Aḥmad Abū Saʿīd al-Rūyānī → Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā → Abū Qaʿnab → Abū Umāmah al-Bāhilī
who said that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Five nights in which duʿāʾ is not rejected...”

❖ Ruling on Authenticity:

There are three major flaws in its chain:

Bandār ibn ʿAmr al-Rūyānī is a liar (كذاب)

  • Ibn ʿAsākir reports from ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz:

"Do not narrate from him, for he is a liar."
    [Tārīkh Madīnah Dimashq: 10/408]

Ibrāhīm ibn Abī Yaḥyā is also a known liar (كذاب)

  • Declared a liar by:
    • Imām Mālik
    • Yaḥyā ibn Saʿīd
    • Ibn Maʿīn, and others

📚 References:

  • Kitāb al-Ḍuʿafāʾ wal-Matrūkīn (1/51)
  • Kitāb al-Majrūḥīn by Ibn Ḥibbān (1/105)
  • Ibn Ḥajar رحمه الله says: “He is Matrūk (abandoned).”
    [Taqrīb al-Tahdhīb: 1/98]

Abū Qaʿnab is Majhūl (unknown)

Nothing is reliably known about him, which weakens the chain further.

❖ Verdict of the Scholars:

Shaykh al-Albānī رحمه الله graded this ḥadīth as fabricated (موضوع).

📚 Silsilat al-Aḥādīth al-Ḍaʿīfah wal-Mawḍūʿah (3/649), ḥadīth no. 1452

✅ Conclusion:

The narration about five special nights when duʿāʾ is not rejected is not authentic. It is based on a chain that contains multiple liars and unknown narrators, and has been declared fabricated by the scholars of ḥadīth.
