❀ Is It Sunnah or Bid‘ah to Stop Eating Before Fajr in Ramadan?
Source: Fatāwā Arkan-e-Islam
✦ The Question
Some Ramadan calendars include a precautionary column that instructs people to stop eating 10–15 minutes before Fajr. Is this practice based on the Sunnah, or is it considered an innovation (bid‘ah)?
✦ Shar‘i Ruling
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!
This practice is an innovation (بدعت), because there is no basis for it in the Qur'an or Sunnah. In fact, the Sunnah teaches the opposite.
✦ Clear Qur’anic Instruction
Allah ﷻ says:
﴿وَكُلوا وَاشرَبوا حَتّى يَتَبَيَّنَ لَكُمُ الخَيطُ الأَبيَضُ مِنَ الخَيطِ الأَسوَدِ مِنَ الفَجرِ﴾
(Surah al-Baqarah: 187)
"And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread (of night)."
❖ This verse makes it explicitly clear that eating and drinking during Suhoor is permissible up until the true dawn (Fajr).
❖ To stop eating before that time due to self-made ‘precaution’ is unnecessary and baseless in Shari‘ah.
✦ Evidence from the Sunnah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِنَّ بِلَالًا يُؤَذِّنُ بِلَيْلٍ، فَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا حَتَّى تَسْمَعُوا أَذَانَ ابْنِ أُمِّ مَكْتُومٍ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يُؤَذِّنُ حَتَّى يَطْلُعَ الْفَجْرُ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Ḥadīth: 1918; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth: 1092)
Translation:
“Bilāl gives the Adhan at night, so eat and drink until you hear the Adhan of Ibn Umm Maktūm, for he does not give the Adhan until Fajr has risen.”
❖ This authentic narration clearly refutes the idea that one should stop eating 10–15 minutes before Fajr.
❖ It confirms that eating until the actual time of Fajr is fully permissible and in line with the Sunnah.
✦ Innovation and Unwarranted Rigidity Condemned
Creating such “precautionary” rules equates to adding to the obligation set by Allah, which is not allowed. It introduces undue hardship and rigidity into the religion.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«هَلَكَ الْمُتَنَطِّعُونَ، هَلَكَ الْمُتَنَطِّعُونَ، هَلَكَ الْمُتَنَطِّعُونَ»
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Kitāb al-‘Ilm, Bāb: Halaak al-Mutanatti‘ūn, Ḥadīth: 2670)
Translation:
“Those who exaggerate (in religion) have perished; those who exaggerate have perished; those who exaggerate have perished.”
❖ This Hadith strongly condemns the act of introducing unnecessary strictness or invented precautions in matters of religion.
