Is Single (Ekahri) Iqamah Established in Islamic Teachings?

Authored by: Ghulam Mustafa Zahid Amn Puri (Hafidhahullah)

Question:

Is the practice of single (ekahri) iqamah established in Islam?

Answer:

The concept of single iqamah, along with single adhan for certain occasions, and double adhan for others, is indeed supported by the relevant narrations. All the available narrations indicate that single iqamah is a valid practice.

Single iqamah is authentically established from sound hadiths, as demonstrated in the following narration:

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (رضي الله عنهما) narrates:

"During the time of the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ), the adhan was called with the phrases repeated twice, and the iqamah was called with the phrases recited once (single iqamah), except for the phrases Qad Qamatis Salah (the prayer has been established), which were repeated twice."
(Musnad Ahmad: 2/85, Sunan Abu Dawood: 510, Sunan al-Nasa'i: 629, with a sound chain)

◈ This hadith has been authenticated by Imam Ibn Khuzaymah (374), Imam Ibn Hibban (1674, 1677), and Imam Hakim (709).
◈ Hafiz Dhahabi (رحمه الله) has agreed with their authentication.

Similarly, Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (رضي الله عنه) narrates:

"Bilal (رضي الله عنه) was instructed to call the adhan with repeated phrases and the iqamah with single phrases."
(Sahih Bukhari: 603, Sahih Muslim: 378)

It is important to note that there is no authentic evidence from Sayyiduna Bilal (رضي الله عنه) regarding double takbir (repeated phrases) in the iqamah.

Imam Abu Abdullah Muhammad bin Nasr Marwazi (رحمه الله) (202–294 AH) stated:

"As far as I know, all the scholars among the hadith experts agree on single iqamah."
(Al-Sunan al-Kubra by Al-Bayhaqi: 1/420, with an authentic chain)

Thus, the practice of single iqamah is established and accepted based on sound narrations and the consensus of scholars from the time of the early hadith experts.
