Is it necessary to repent from minor sins as well?
Just like major sins, it is also necessary to repent from minor sins.
Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه narrates that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to supplicate in prostration:
اللهم اغفر لي ذنبي كله دقه وجله وأوله وآخره وعلانيته وسره
“O Allah! Forgive me all of my sins, the small and the great, the first and the last, the apparent and the hidden.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 483)
✔ Imam Subki رحمه الله (771 AH):
“There is consensus of the Ummah that repentance from minor sins is obligatory just like it is from major sins.”
(طبقات الشافعية: 7/98)
Conclusion:
Repentance (tawbah) is obligatory not only for major sins but also for minor sins. The Prophet ﷺ himself sought forgiveness for all sins, whether small or great, open or hidden, and the Ummah is in agreement on this ruling.
