❀ Sharʿī Ruling on Performing Multiple ʿUmrahs While Residing in Makkah ❀
🖋 Written by: Shaykh Mubashshir Ahmad Rabbānī ḥafiẓahullāh
Question:
Is there any prohibition against performing multiple ʿUmrahs while staying in Makkah? Please clarify.
Answer:
There is no prohibition in Sharīʿah against performing multiple ʿUmrahs while residing in Makkah. Just as it is permissible and encouraged to frequently perform Ṭawāf of the Kaʿbah, it is likewise permissible to perform multiple ʿUmrahs.
✿ Evidence:
To perform another ʿUmrah, a person must go outside the Ḥaram to assume iḥrām — as was done by Sayyidah ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها, who went to Tanaʿīm (Masjid ʿĀʾishah) for this purpose.
It is also correct to assume iḥrām from within Makkah for those whose residence is within the Ḥaram. As narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما, the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Whoever is within the boundaries (of the Mīqāt), their place of assuming iḥrām is from their home — even the people of Makkah will assume iḥrām from Makkah itself."
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Ḥajj, Bāb Mīqāt Ahl ash-Shām, ḥadīth 1526]
Objection: The Prophet ﷺ Didn’t Perform Multiple ʿUmrahs While in Makkah?
Some raise the objection: “The Prophet ﷺ did not perform multiple ʿUmrahs while in Makkah.”
The response is:
➤ The Prophet ﷺ also did not perform multiple Ṭawāfs while staying in Makkah during that period.
He and his companions performed ʿUmrah and then stayed outside Makkah in al-Abṭaḥ, and proceeded to Minā on the 8th of Dhul-Ḥijjah.
➤ If one argues that frequent Ṭawāf is allowed because there is no prohibition, then it must also be acknowledged that multiple ʿUmrahs are not prohibited either.
Hence, the ruling stands:
It is permissible to perform multiple ʿUmrahs while residing in Makkah.
