Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah Behind the Imam: Wājib or Sunnah?
Question
"What is the ruling of the follower’s recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah behind the imam? Is it obligatory upon him, or is it Sunnah?"
✔ Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ʿammā baʿd!
Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah behind the imam is wājib (obligatory), because there is a clear statement of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Vol. 1, p. 104)
"There is no prayer for the one who does not recite the Opening of the Book (Sūrat al-Fātiḥah)."
Likewise, in Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah, it is narrated specifically regarding the follower:
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah, Vol. 1, p. 248)
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: No prayer suffices without reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah. I (Abū Hurayrah) asked: What if I am behind the imam? He ﷺ took my hand and said: Recite it to yourself, O Persian!"
Conclusion
From these narrations it is clear that:
❀ Whether imam,
❀ Or follower,
❀ Or one praying alone —
Reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is obligatory for all.
