Question
Is the recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah obligatory upon the follower (muqtadī) in prayer?
Answer
Authentic aḥādīth prove that the recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is obligatory for the follower (muqtadī) in prayer.
Evidence from Aḥādīth
❀ Sayyidunā Anas ibn Mālik (رضي الله عنه) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
إن أحدكم إذا قام فى صلاته فإنه يناجي ربه
“When one of you stands in prayer, he is indeed conversing with his Lord.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 405; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 551)
- Imām Ibn Ḥibbān (رحمه الله) commented:
“This report clearly proves that reciting Sūrat al-Fātiḥah in prayer is obligatory for the follower, for the Prophet ﷺ informed that the worshipper converses with his Lord, and such conversation only occurs through recitation, not merely tasbīḥ, takbīr, or silence.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān, 1783)
He further said:
“The command to recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah in prayer is a command of obligation, supported by many other authentic reports, while the command to recite anything besides it is not obligatory, as established by ijmāʿ.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān, 1790)
❀ Imām ʿAbdullāh ibn al-Mubārak (رحمه الله) said:
ينوي أنه يناجي ربه
“When a man stands for prayer, he should intend that he is conversing with his Lord.”
(Taʿẓīm Qadr al-Ṣalāh 159 – chain ṣaḥīḥ)
❀ Sayyidunā ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:
لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بفاتحة الكتاب
“There is no prayer for the one who does not recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 756; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 394)
This clearly proves that prayer is invalid without Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.
Refutation of the View “Nafī Kamāl”
Some say that “lā ṣalāh” here means “no complete prayer,” not “no valid prayer.” They use other aḥādīth as parallels:
- Example:
“There is no prayer in the presence of food.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 560)
But this is known by ijmāʿ not to invalidate the prayer, only to indicate lack of perfection.
- Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Kathīr (رحمه الله) said:
يمنع من ذٰلك إجماع، لا يعرف خلافه عن مجتهد كبير محقق
“Consensus prevents us from taking it as negation of validity here, for no great mujtahid disagreed.”
(Kitāb al-Aḥkām al-Kabīr 2/444)
They also cite:
“There is no prayer for the neighbor of a mosque except in the mosque.”
(Sunan al-Dāraqutnī 1553)
But this narration is weak.
Stronger Proofs
- From ʿUbādah ibn al-Ṣāmit
“Prayer does not suffice in which a man does not recite Sūrat al-Fātiḥah.”
(Sunan al-Dāraqutnī 1225 – chain ṣaḥīḥ; graded ṣaḥīḥ by Imām al-Dāraqutnī)
- From Abū Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه):
“Prayer does not suffice in which Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is not recited.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Khuzaymah 490; Ṣaḥīḥ Ibn Ḥibbān 1789 – chain ṣaḥīḥ)
The phrase “lā tujziʾu ṣalāh” proves that the negation in the ḥadīth of ʿUbādah means invalidity (nafī ṣiḥḥah), not just lack of perfection.
According to authentic aḥādīth, the recitation of Sūrat al-Fātiḥah is obligatory upon every worshipper, including the muqtadī (follower). Prayer without it is invalid.
