Sharʿī Guidance on Reciting Salawat 100 Times Daily
Source: Fatāwā al-ʿIlmiyyah, Volume 1, Kitāb al-Duʿāʾ, Page 486
Is there any authentic basis for reciting Salawat (Durūd) 100 times a day? If so, please provide a reference.
(Question by: Ḥabībullāh, Peshawar)
Several narrations that mention reciting Salawat 100 times daily have been transmitted, but these are weak (ḍaʿīf) and rejected (mardūd) according to the Hadith scholars. They are found in the following works:
◈ Al-Muʿjam al-Ṣaghīr by al-Ṭabarānī
(Vol. 2, Pg. 48, Ḥadīth 915)
◈ Al-Targhīb wa al-Tarhīb
(Vol. 2, Pg. 495)
◈ Ittiḥāf al-Muttaqīn
(Vol. 5, Pg. 51)
Imām al-Zabīdī رحمه الله stated:
“It is a ḥasan Hadith.”
However, the majority of Hadith scholars have declared these narrations weak and rejected, hence they cannot serve as a legal basis for determining a fixed number such as 100 times.
While no specific number such as 100 times daily is authentically proven, numerous Ṣaḥīḥ aḥādīth emphasize abundant recitation of Salawat.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever sends blessings upon me once, Allah sends blessings upon him ten times.”
➤ Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, Ḥadīth 408
① There is no authentic Hadith specifying the recitation of Salawat 100 times daily
② The narrations with this specification are weak or rejected
③ Authentic Hadith strongly encourages frequent and abundant recitation of Salawat
④ Every single Salawat earns ten-fold mercy from Allah ﷻ
