Question:
What is the ruling on performing ṣalāh without wuḍūʾ?
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulam Mustafa Zaheer Amunpuri
Answer:
Wuḍūʾ is obligatory for ṣalāh. Any prayer performed without wuḍūʾ is invalid and not accepted.
Prophetic Evidence:
❀ ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿUmar رضي الله عنهما narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا تقبل صلاة بغير طهور
“Prayer is not accepted without purification.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 224)
❀ Abū Hurayrah رضي الله عنه narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
لا تقبل صلاة من أحدث حتى يتوضأ...
“The prayer of one who breaks wind is not accepted until he performs wuḍūʾ.”
A man from Ḥaḍramawt asked: “What is ḥadath, O Abū Hurayrah?” He replied: “Passing wind, whether silently or loudly.”
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī: 135; Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim: 225)
Scholarly Consensus:
❀ ʿAllāmah Ibn Baṭṭāl رحمه الله (449 AH):
أجمعت الأمة على أنه لا تجزئ صلاة إلا بطهارة، على ما جاء فى الحديث
“The Ummah has reached consensus that prayer is not valid without purification, as stated in the ḥadīth.”
(Sharḥ Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, 1/218; ʿĀriḍat al-Aḥwadhī, 1/9; Sharḥ al-Nawawī, 3/128; Sharḥ Abī Dāwūd al-ʿAynī al-Ḥanafī, 1/184)

- Performing ṣalāh without wuḍūʾ = invalid.
- Consensus of the Ummah affirms this ruling.
- Purification is a precondition for the acceptance of prayer.
