Sharʿī Ruling on Fortune-Telling Through Palm Lines
Source: Fatāwā al-Deen al-Khāliṣ, Vol. 1, p.94
Question:
Is it permissible to predict one’s fate based on the lines of the hand? Some people claim to do so, stating: "You will have two marriages," or "You will acquire great wealth," based on palm lines.
All praise is due to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed:
Wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā biLlāh.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
"There is no evil omen (ṭiyarah), and the best of it is fa’l (good optimism)."
The companions (رضي الله عنهم) asked, "What is fa’l?"
He ﷺ replied:
"A good word that one of you hears."
(Muttafaqun ʿalayh, Mishkāt: 2/391)
The Prophet ﷺ disliked evil omens but approved of positive optimism.
It is narrated:
"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ would take good omens, but would not believe in bad luck, and he liked good names."
(Mishkāt: 2/392)
Anas (رضي الله عنه) reported:
"When the Prophet ﷺ set out for any purpose, he liked to hear words like ‘O Rāshid’ (O rightly guided one) or ‘O Najīḥ’ (O successful one)."
(Tirmidhī: 2/291, Mishkāt: 2/392)
Claiming to predict fate through palm lines is not only baseless, but also contradicts Islamic beliefs.
It is prohibited for the following reasons:
① It involves claiming knowledge of the unseen (ghayb), while only Allah possesses knowledge of the unseen.
② It falls under superstition and innovation, which have no place in Islam.
③ Some people consider those who read palms to be knowers of the unseen, which is a grave misguidance.
④ If this involves physical contact between unrelated men and women, accompanied by frivolous behavior, it further becomes forbidden and immoral.
◈ Predicting fortune through palm lines is a bidʿah (innovation) and misguidance.
◈ It has no basis in Islam and stands in violation of core beliefs regarding the unseen.
◈ Muslims must strictly avoid such practices and refrain from participating in or endorsing them.
Waṣallallāhu ʿalā Nabiyyinā Muḥammad wa ālihi wa ṣaḥbihi ajmaʿīn.
