Is Magic Among the Major Sins?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha (حفظه الله)

Answer:

Yes, magic is among the major sins (Kabā’ir).

Abu Huraira (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said:

"Avoid the seven destructive sins." The people asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What are they?" He replied:Associating partners with Allah (Shirk)
Practicing magic (Sihr)
Unjustly killing a soul whom Allah has forbidden to kill
Consuming usury (Riba)
Consuming the wealth of orphans
Fleeing from the battlefield in war
Slandering chaste, innocent, believing women
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith No. 55; Sahih Muslim, Hadith No. 89)

How Many Major Sins Are There?

The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) was asked: "O Messenger of Allah! How many major sins are there?"
He (ﷺ) replied:

"They are nine. The greatest among them is associating partners with Allah (Shirk), unjustly killing a believer, fleeing from the battlefield, slandering chaste women, practicing magic, consuming the wealth of orphans, engaging in usury, disobeying Muslim parents, and violating the sanctity of the Sacred House (Ka‘bah), which remains your Qiblah both in life and after death. Anyone who dies without committing these major sins while performing prayer and giving Zakah will be in the central part of Paradise, in the company of Muhammad (ﷺ), where its doors will be adorned with gold."
(Al-Tabarani in Al-Kabir, 11/430)
