✍ Written by: Imran Ayub Lahori
Imām Ibn al-Qayyim رحمه الله states:
“Closing the eyes during Salah was not the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.”
This is evident from the narration regarding Tashahhud, where the Prophet ﷺ used to look at the finger he pointed during du‘āʾ.
Zād al-Ma‘ād: 1/248
Imām Fayrūz Ābādī رحمه الله also affirms:
“The Prophet ﷺ used to keep his eyes open during prayer.”
Safar al-Saʿādah: p. 20
✔ The Sunnah is to keep the eyes open during Salah.
✔ There is no authentic evidence of the Prophet ﷺ closing his eyes during prayer.
✔ Closing the eyes may be tolerated only to avoid distraction, but should not become a regular practice.
