Is It Permissible to Take Injections During the Day in Ramadan?

❖ Question:

Does receiving an injection or enema for medical treatment during the day in Ramadan affect the fast?

❖ Answer:

Medical injections fall into two categories:

Nutritional Injections:
These are injections that provide nourishment or strength, making a person independent of eating and drinking. Such injections are considered fast-breaking (mufṭir) because they are equivalent in purpose to food and drink.
Hence, their use invalidates the fast, as their function aligns with the objectives of nourishment, which is what fasting prohibits during the day.

Non-Nutritional Injections:
These injections do not provide nutrition or strength, and do not substitute food or drink. Such injections do not break the fast, because they neither fall under the wording nor the meaning of what the Shariah prohibits in fasting.
They are not classified as food or drink, nor their equivalent. Therefore, the default ruling is that the fast remains valid unless there is clear evidence to indicate otherwise.
