Is It Permissible to Speak to One’s Wife During Intimacy?

Published in: Shumara al-Sunnah, Jhelum

❖ Answer:

Yes, it is permissible to speak to one’s wife during intercourse.
There is no authentic evidence that prohibits this.

❖ Scholarly Explanation:

Nawwāb Ṣiddīq Ḥasan Khān رحمه الله (d. 1307 AH) wrote:
"Some scholars have disliked speaking during intercourse by analogy to the disapproval of speaking while relieving oneself.
However, if the reasoning is that both acts are distasteful, then that analogy is invalid — because intimacy is a moment of pleasure, not something inherently filthy.

Speaking during such moments is part of good companionship, and there is clear enjoyment in it.
As a poet said:
'What I love during intimacy is your soft speech and gentle gaze.'

Moreover, playfulness and flirtation with the spouse have been legislated by the Prophet ﷺ, and during intimacy, such conduct is even more fitting than at other times."
