Is It Permissible to Say “Adāmallāhu Ayyāmaka”? – Shar‘ī Ruling and Evidences
📚 Taken from: Fatāwā Arkān-e-Islām

❖ Question:

What is the Shar‘ī ruling on using expressions like:
“أَدَامَ اللّٰهُ أَيَّامَكَ” (May Allah prolong your days forever)
◈ or “أَطَالَ اللّٰهُ بَقَاءَكَ” (May Allah lengthen your life)?

Are such phrases permissible?

❖ Answer:

Alḥamdulillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu was-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:

The ruling differs based on the exact phrase used. Let's look at each separately:

❌ “أَدَامَ اللّٰهُ أَيَّامَكَ” – Is It Permissible?

This expression literally means:

“May Allah cause your days to remain forever,”
i.e., May you live eternally in this world.

✅ Shar‘ī Ruling: This expression is objectionable and impermissible.

❖ Why Saying “Adāmallāhu Ayyāmaka” Is Not Allowed:

✿ This du‘ā’ implies eternal worldly life, which is against the laws of creation set by Allah ﷻ.

✿ The worldly life is temporary, and everlasting life is not possible for any human being.

❖ Qur’ānic Evidences:

﴿كُلُّ مَنْ عَلَيْهَا فَانٍ۝ وَيَبْقَىٰ وَجْهُ رَبِّكَ ذُو الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ﴾
“Everyone upon the earth will perish, and only the Face of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honor, will remain.”
(Sūrat ar-Raḥmān: 26–27)

✦ This verse confirms: Every creature is mortal.

﴿وَمَا جَعَلْنَا لِبَشَرٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ الْخُلْدَ ۖ أَفَإِيْن مِّتَّ فَهُمُ الْخَالِدُونَ﴾

“And We did not grant immortality to any human before you (O Prophet ﷺ). So if you die, will they live forever?”
(Sūrat al-Anbiyā’: 34)

✦ This verse establishes that eternal life is not granted even to prophets, let alone others.

✅“أَطَالَ اللّٰهُ بَقَاءَكَ” – When Is It Permissible?

This phrase means:

“May Allah prolong your stay (life).”

Permissible with a condition:
It becomes valid and praiseworthy if accompanied by a righteous intention, such as:

“May Allah lengthen your life in obedience to Him.”
“May Allah prolong your days with goodness and piety.”

✦ Without such a condition of obedience, simply wishing for long life may not be desirable, as a prolonged life can either be a blessing or a burden, depending on one's actions.

❖ Conclusion:

❌ Saying “أَدَامَ اللّٰهُ أَيَّامَكَ” is not permissible,
because it contradicts clear Qur’ānic teachings that life in this world is finite and no human is granted eternity.

✅ A conditional du‘ā for prolonged life — tied to obedience and righteousness — is permissible and appropriate.
