Source: Ahkam wa Masail – Masajid ka Bayan, vol. 1, p. 100

Question

A woman who used to clean Masjid Nabawi ﷺ passed away. The Sahabah (RA) performed her funeral prayer at night and buried her. Later, the Prophet ﷺ inquired about her, and upon being informed of her death and burial, he said, “Show me her grave.” Then the Prophet ﷺ prayed at her grave.

Does this mean that it is permissible to pray at a grave?

Answer

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ‘alā Rasūlillāh. Ammā ba‘d:

The prayer that the Prophet ﷺ performed at her grave—the woman who used to clean Masjid Nabawi ﷺ—was actually her funeral prayer (Salat al-Janazah) which the Prophet ﷺ offered after her burial.

📖 Evidence:

  • Sahih al-Bukhari – Kitab al-Jana’iz, Bab al-Salat ‘ala al-Qabr ba‘da ma yudfan
  • Sahih Muslim – Kitab al-Jana’iz, Bab al-Salat ‘ala al-Qabr

Thus, the prayer at the grave was funeral prayer, not a regular prayer.

Clarification on Praying at the Grave

❀ Performing funeral prayer at the grave is permissible, as proven by the practice of the Prophet ﷺ.

❀ However, performing any other type of prayer (e.g., regular salah, nafl) at a grave is prohibited.
