Question:
Is it permissible to perform Hajj on behalf of a deceased person?
Answer:
Yes, it is permissible to perform Hajj on behalf of a deceased person, as established in authentic Sunnah.
Sayyidunā ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbbās رضي الله عنهما narrated:
A man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
“My mother vowed to perform Hajj but died before fulfilling it. Can I perform Hajj on her behalf?”
The Prophet ﷺ replied:
“If your mother had a debt, would you not repay it?”
The man said: “Yes!”
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Then the debt owed to Allah has more right to be fulfilled.”
[Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Jazāʾ aṣ-Ṣayd: Bāb al-Ḥajj wa’n-Nudhūr ʿan al-Mayyit ḥadīth 1852]
✿ Conclusion:
This ḥadīth clearly proves that performing Hajj on behalf of a deceased individual is valid and considered a fulfillment of a religious obligation they were unable to complete in their lifetime.
