Ruling on Zayd Marrying a Girl Breastfed by His Sister
Source: Fatāwā Amunpuri by Shaykh Ghulām Muṣṭafā Ẓahīr Amunpuri
If Zayd’s sister has breastfed a girl, is it permissible for Zayd to marry that girl?
No, such a marriage is not permissible.
The girl who was breastfed by Zayd’s sister becomes his foster niece (رضاعی بھانجی), and Zayd becomes her foster maternal uncle (رضاعی ماموں).
Hence, both are maḥram (permanently unmarriageable) to each other due to raḍāʿah (breastfeeding).
﴿وَبَنَاتُ الْأُخْتِ﴾
(Sūrah al-Nisā’: 23)
Translation:
“…and [prohibited to you in marriage are] the daughters of your sisters…”
This applies generally to both biological and foster relationships.
Therefore, just as it is forbidden to marry one's biological niece, it is equally forbidden to marry a foster niece.
"Every relationship that is prohibited by blood is also prohibited by breastfeeding."
Zayd cannot marry the girl his sister breastfed, because she is considered his foster niece, and their marriage is prohibited in Islam
