❖ Question:
Is it permissible to delay Salah in order to fulfill its conditions? For instance, if a person is occupied in obtaining water, can they delay the prayer?
❖ Answer:
الحمد لله، والصلاة والسلام علىٰ رسول الله، أما بعد!
The correct view is that delaying Salah beyond its prescribed time is not permissible under any circumstances, especially when there is a risk of the time expiring. In such a case, the individual must pray according to their current circumstances, even if a condition (such as water) may soon be available.
❖ Explicit Command from the Qur’an
﴿إِنَّ الصَّلوةَ كانَت عَلَى المُؤمِنينَ كِتـبًا مَوقوتًا﴾
(Surah An-Nisa: 103)
“Indeed, the prayer is obligatory upon the believers at fixed times.”
This verse is a clear proof that Salah must be performed within its specified time, and doing so is compulsory.
❖ The Teaching of the Prophet ﷺ
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ clearly defined the times of Salah, indicating that each prayer must be performed within its designated time by every Muslim.
❖ Reasoning from the Legislation of Tayammum
If it were permissible to wait in order to fulfill a condition of Salah (like obtaining water), then Tayammum would not have been legislated in Shari’ah.
❖ Whether Short or Long Delay — Both Are Unacceptable
Whether a person intends to delay the prayer for a short while or a longer period, both are forms of delaying beyond the designated time if the Salah is not offered before the time expires.
✘ Therefore, any form of delay is impermissible when it leads to the expiration of Salah's prescribed time.
❖ Position of Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله
Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله also upheld the view that delaying Salah beyond its time is impermissible, even if one is yet to fulfill a condition of the prayer, such as purification with water.
→ Salah must always be offered within its specified time, regardless of whether all ideal conditions are fully met.
→ The obligation of praying on time supersedes the pursuit of fulfilling secondary conditions (e.g., obtaining water).
→ When necessary, alternative concessions like Tayammum should be availed to maintain the timely performance of Salah.

This is what I hold to be correct. And Allah knows best what is right.
