❖ Question:

Is it permissible to purchase food items and similar necessities on credit in Islam?

❖ Answer:

Yes, purchasing such items on credit is permissible in Sharīʿah.

It is narrated from Sayyidah ʿĀ’ishah رضي الله عنها that:

"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ bought food grains on credit from a Jew and placed his armor with him as collateral."
(Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī, Kitāb al-Rahn, Bāb: al-Rahn ʿinda al-Yahūd wa Ghayrihim – Hadith: 2513)

This authentic ḥadīth proves that food and daily necessities may be purchased on credit in Islam.

(And Allah knows best.)
