Is It Permissible to Apply Henna During Menstruation?

❀ Shar‘i Ruling on Applying Henna During Menstruation ❀

Source:

This article is derived from the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women” based on the fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.

❖ Question:

What is the ruling on applying henna during menstruation?
And is the color of henna considered impure as long as it remains on the hands?

❖ Answer:

It is permissible for a woman to apply henna during her menstrual period, because her body remains pure (ṭāhir).
This is why it is also permissible to shake hands with a menstruating woman.

It is authentically reported that the Prophet ﷺ drank from the same spot as ʿĀ’ishah (رضي الله عنها) while she was menstruating.
He ﷺ also used to place his mouth where hers had been on the drinking vessel.

And when she once hesitated to hand something to him due to being in a state of ḥayḍ, he ﷺ said:

"إن حيضتك ليست في يدك"
[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim – Kitāb al-Ḥayḍ, 11]

“Your menstruation is not in your hand.”

Henna is pure (ṭāhir) and is applied to pure areas of the body.
There is nothing in the Sharīʿah that forbids it, and its stain is not considered impure.
