Is It Permissible for Mujahideen to Break Their Fast While Fighting?

Question:

Is it permissible for Mujahideen fighting against enemies in Ramadan to break their fast? And should they make up for the missed fasts after Ramadan?

Answer:

If the Mujahideen are engaged in a battle while on a journey that allows for shortening prayers (Qasr Salah), then they are permitted to break their fast. However, they must make up for the missed fasts after Ramadan.

If they are not traveling, for example, if the disbelievers attack their city, then:
  • Those who can fast while engaging in Jihad must observe the fast, as it remains obligatory.
  • Those who cannot manage both fasting and fighting, and if Jihad is an individual obligation (Fard Ayn) upon them, they are allowed to break their fast. However, they must make up for the missed fasts after Ramadan.
