Can a man wear a gold ring at the time of marriage? Often, in-laws place a ring on the groom’s finger — what is its Shar‘i status?
Islam strictly forbids Muslim men from wearing gold — whether it is in the form of:
In both cases, it is impermissible.
Sayyidunā ʿAlī رضي الله عنه narrated:
"أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَرِيرًا بِيَمِينِهِ، وَذَهَبًا بِيَسَارِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ هَذَيْنِ حَرَامٌ عَلَى ذُكُورِ أُمَّتِي"
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took silk in his right hand and gold in his left hand and said: ‘These two are forbidden for the males of my ummah.’”
Another narration from Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim states:
"أنّ النبي ﷺ رأى خاتمًا من ذهب في يد رجل، فقال: يعمد أحدكم إلى جمرة من نار فيجعلها في يده!"
“The Prophet ﷺ saw a gold ring on a man’s hand and said: ‘Would one of you take a burning coal of fire and place it on his hand!’”
Then the man immediately removed the ring and threw it away.
✔ It is absolutely prohibited for men to wear gold, whether at the time of marriage or otherwise.
✖ The cultural practice of exchanging gold rings in marriage does not justify what is clearly ḥarām in Sharī‘ah.

❖ Question:
Can a man wear a gold ring at the time of marriage? Often, in-laws place a ring on the groom’s finger — what is its Shar‘i status?
❖ Ruling: Gold is Prohibited for Muslim Men
Islam strictly forbids Muslim men from wearing gold — whether it is in the form of:
- A ring gifted by in-laws
- Or one made by the groom himself
In both cases, it is impermissible.
Evidence from Ḥadīth
Sayyidunā ʿAlī رضي الله عنه narrated:
"أَخَذَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ حَرِيرًا بِيَمِينِهِ، وَذَهَبًا بِيَسَارِهِ، ثُمَّ قَالَ: إِنَّ هَذَيْنِ حَرَامٌ عَلَى ذُكُورِ أُمَّتِي"
