Ruling on a Wife Beautifying Herself and Coloring Her Hair at Her Husband’s Request
Answered by: Fadīlat al-ʿĀlim Ḥāfiẓ Khidr Ḥayāt (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Is it permissible for a wife to beautify herself and color her hair golden (blonde) at the request of her husband?
Islam permits women to beautify themselves under the following conditions:
◈ The beautification must not violate any Islamic ruling.
◈ It should not imitate disbelievers or immoral individuals.
◈ It must not cause physical or medical harm.
▶ If these conditions are met, coloring hair—especially at the husband's request—is permissible and even encouraged as part of maintaining a healthy marital relationship.
▶ Islam only prohibits coloring hair black to conceal old age, while other colors are not forbidden.
Both spouses should be mindful of the following:
◈ Their desires should remain within the bounds of Shari‘ah.
◈ They should consider the cultural norms (ʿurf) and the family environment.
▶ If the husband desires that his wife color her hair golden, or if the wife wishes to adorn herself in a particular way to please her husband, such desires are natural and acceptable in Islam.
It is important to examine where such desires originate from:
◈ Sometimes, desires are shaped by media, internet trends, or social influences, which may be unrealistic or misaligned with Islamic or cultural values.
◈ In such cases, these influences should be evaluated thoughtfully and managed wisely, so as not to cause harm to the peace and stability of the marital relationship.
Conclusion:
Coloring the hair in golden or other non-black colors—especially at the husband's request—is permissible, provided that it:
– Does not mimic non-Islamic or immoral customs,
– Is free from medical harm,
– And aligns with Islamic principles and household harmony.
Beautification with the intention of pleasing one’s spouse is not only allowed but also encouraged in Islam.
