Is It Permissible for a Khatib to Take Salary for the Friday Sermon?
Taken from: Aḥkām wa Masāʾil – Masāʾil al-Buyūʿ, vol.1, p.391
❖ The Question
Can a khatīb or preacher take a fixed salary for delivering the Friday sermon or giving religious lessons?
❖ The Answer
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, ammā baʿd:
Yes, it is permissible for a khatīb (Friday preacher) and a wāʿiẓ (religious lecturer) to take a salary for delivering Friday sermons or for teaching and preaching.
◈ Evidence
The Prophet ﷺ said:
«إِنَّ أَحَقَّ مَا أَخَذْتُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ»
“The most deserving thing for which you may take wages is the Book of Allah.”
This includes teaching, reciting, explaining, and preaching the Qur’an, hence making it permissible to take payment for such services.
