❖ It Is Mandatory to Make Intention Before Fajr for Fasting ❖
Written by: Imran Ayyub Lahori
Fasting requires a firm intention before Fajr (true dawn), especially in the case of obligatory (farḍ) fasts. This is clearly established in the authentic narration of Sayyidah Ḥafṣah (رضي الله عنها):
◈ Hadith Evidence
Sayyidah Ḥafṣah (رضي الله عنها) narrated that the Prophet (ﷺ) said:
"مَنْ لَمْ يُجْمِعِ الصِّيَامَ قَبْلَ الْفَجْرِ فَلَا صِيَامَ لَهُ"
"Whoever does not firmly intend the fast before Fajr, then there is no fast for him."
[Ṣaḥīḥ: Ṣaḥīḥ Abū Dāwūd: 2143, Kitāb al-Ṣawm: Chapter on Intention for Fasting,
Abū Dāwūd: 2454, Tirmidhī: 830]
This ruling is also supported by the foundational Hadith:
"إِنَّمَا الْأَعْمَالُ بِالنِّيَّاتِ"
"Actions are only judged by intentions."
[Bukhārī: 1, Book of Revelation]
◈ For obligatory fasts (such as Ramadan, Qadāʾ, or Kaffārah), it is mandatory to make the intention before the onset of Fajr (true dawn). Without this intention, the fast is not valid.
