Question:
When leading Tarawih prayer, am I required to recite the Qur'an in sequential order? Or can I recite any portion I have memorized during the day, even if it is out of sequence?
Answer:
It is recommended (masnoon) for Imams to recite the entire Qur'an in Tarawih prayer if they are capable of doing so. The best practice is for the Imam to recite in order, ensuring that each night’s recitation continues from where he left off the previous night. This allows the congregation to listen to the entire Qur'an in a structured and sequential manner.
Completing one full recitation (khatm) of the Qur'an in Ramadan is preferable, as long as:
It does not become burdensome for the Imam or the congregation.
The recitation is performed with proper tajweed, tranquility, and humility (khushu’).
Since the purpose of Salah is to seek closeness to Allah with sincerity, fear, and devotion, it is not just about completing a certain number of rak‘ahs. True Salah involves deep connection, presence of heart, and spiritual reflection.
May Allah guide all Muslims toward actions that bring them success in this world and salvation in the Hereafter.
