Is It Allowed for a Wife to Hide Money and Lie About Its Source?

Source: Fatāwā Muḥammadiyyah, Vol. 1, p. 722

❖ Question:

If a woman secretly saves money from what her husband earns and uses it to purchase something, then falsely claims that the item was gifted by her mother or brother,
is such an act permissible or impermissible in Sharīʿah?

❖ Answer:

Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh, Ammā Baʿd!

This action is completely impermissible (ḥarām) in Sharīʿah and is based on falsehood. The matter can be understood from the following perspectives:

➊ Lying: A Cursed and Prohibited Act

Lying is categorically forbidden in Islam.
◈ It is considered an act of accursed people and is a sign of hypocrisy.

➋ Deceiving the Husband: Clearly Forbidden

Deceiving one’s husband is explicitly impermissible.
◈ The Prophet ﷺ said:

«مَنْ غَشَّ فَلَيْسَ مِنَّا»
“Whoever deceives is not from among us.”

(Tuḥfat al-Aḥwadhī, Vol. 2, Chapter: The Dislike of Cheating, p. 272)

➌ In Simple Terms: A Grave Violation of Islamic Morality

◈ When a wife stealthily saves money from her husband, then lies by attributing the purchase to her mother or brother,
she commits three major sins:

Lying
Breach of trust (khiyānah)
Deception (ghish)

✅ Conclusion:

Such an act is in clear violation of Islamic teachings and is considered unlawful (ḥarām) in all respects.
