Is it permissible to have intercourse with a pregnant wife? Is there any explicit text from the Qur'an or Sunnah declaring its permissibility or prohibition?
It is permissible for a man to have intercourse with his pregnant wife. Allah ﷻ says:
نِسَاؤُكُمْ حَرْثٌ لَّكُمْ
[Surah Al-Baqarah 2:223]
"Your wives are a place of sowing for you..."
Also, He ﷻ says:
[Surah Al-Mu’minūn 23:5-6]
"And those who guard their private parts, except with their wives or what their right hands possess — for they are not to be blamed."
In both verses, the term "their wives" is mentioned without restriction, implying that enjoyment with one’s wife is permissible in all conditions unless specifically restricted by other textual evidence.
Hence, there is no need for a separate explicit text to prove the permissibility of intercourse during pregnancy, because permissibility is the default ruling in the absence of any prohibition.
Exceptions:
✔ During menstruation (ḥayḍ) — intercourse is prohibited in the private part.
✔ During postnatal bleeding (nifās) — also prohibited until purification.
✔ Anal intercourse (dubr) — haram, as it involves impurity and filth.
If a woman becomes pure before forty days of nifās, then intercourse is permissible at that point.
