Question:

A woman from New York has asked whether the money received from the government for taking care of one's parents at home is Halal (permissible) or not.

Clarification Regarding Government Payments for Parental Home Care


① Government's Intent and Purpose


◈ If the government provides this amount as compensation for serving and caring for one’s parents, then it is considered a gift.
◈ In such a case, receiving this money is permissible (Halal) and there is no objection to it.


② Serving Parents is a Religious Duty


◈ Serving one’s parents is a Shar‘i obligation upon children, whether or not the government provides compensation for it.
◈ The payment is merely an additional reward from the government, and accepting it is allowed.


③ Condition for Permissibility


◈ The payment remains Halal as long as there is no violation of governmental laws or Islamic principles in the process.


Summary


It is permissible and Halal to accept the money given by the government for taking care of one’s parents at home, because it is considered compensation for service and may be treated as a gift from the government.
