Is Discord Among Muslims a Plot of Shayṭān?

Compiled by: Dr. Raza Abdullah Pasha ḥafiẓahullāh

❖ Question:

Does Shayṭān cause discord among Muslims?

❖ Answer:

Yes, absolutely!

It is narrated from Jābir رضي الله عنه that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:

﴿إن الشيطان قد أيس أن يعبده المصلون فى جزيرة العرب، ولكن فى التحريش بينهم﴾
"Indeed, Shayṭān has despaired of being worshipped by those who pray in the Arabian Peninsula, but he will incite discord among them."

[Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, ḥadīth no. 2812]

❖ Explanation:

The enemy of Allah, Iblīs, blamed his own misfortune on Ādam عليه السلام, and in arrogance and rebellion refused to prostrate to him. Since then, Iblīs has declared eternal enmity toward Ādam عليه السلام and his descendants.

The true reason for his punishment and humiliation was his own arrogance and disobedience, not any action of Ādam عليه السلام.

As a result, Iblīs has committed himself to:

❖ Misleading humanity from Allah’s path
❖ Promoting shirk (polytheism) and rebellion against divine commands
❖ Disrupting the unity of believers

❖ Current Strategy of Shayṭān:

In Jazīrat al-ʿArab (the Arabian Peninsula), where the people of Tawḥīd (monotheism) reside and regularly offer prayers, Shayṭān has lost hope of being worshipped directly.

Therefore, his new focus is to:

✔ Instill hatred, envy, and malice among believers
✔ Cause disputes and divisions in their personal and communal matters
✔ Disrupt their unity through subtle schemes and whisperings

❖ Conclusion:

✔ Shayṭān’s goal is no longer physical idol worship among praying Muslims in the Arabian Peninsula, but mental and social disunity.

✔ He sows the seeds of discord, turning small differences into major rifts.

Believers must remain vigilant, adhere to brotherhood, and suppress all forms of division, suspicion, and internal enmity, recognizing that such conflicts are among Shayṭān’s greatest tactics.
