❀ Ruling on Purchasing and Keeping Magazines Containing Pictures ❀
This response is derived from the fatwas compiled in the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women,” translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
I enjoy reading beneficial magazines and journals and derive educational value from them. However, I am often troubled by the presence of pictures within them. Is it permissible to purchase such magazines? And after reading them, what should I do — should I keep them for future reference or burn them?
You are permitted to read beneficial types of magazines and journals, especially those that provide religious, literary, or moral content from which you can benefit.
As for the pictures contained within them:
✔ You should obliterate the images by using ink or any other means that removes or disfigures the facial features.
✔ Alternatively, cover the images or store the magazines in a closed place, such as a cabinet or box, where the images are not visible.
✔ If there is no further need for the magazines, it is permissible to burn them to dispose of them respectfully.
