Is it obligatory to perform both tayammum and masah (wiping) over a bandage at the same time?
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
Declaring both wiping over the bandage and performing tayammum as simultaneously obligatory is incorrect. This goes against the principles of the Shari‘ah, as it is not from the way of the religion to make two separate purification methods obligatory for the same limb at the same time.
There is no precedent in the Shari‘ah for making two acts of worship obligatory at the same time for the same cause.
Allah ﷻ does not make two separate acts of worship mandatory upon a person for one single reason.

Question:
Is it obligatory to perform both tayammum and masah (wiping) over a bandage at the same time?
Answer:
Al-ḥamdu lillāh, waṣ-ṣalātu wa-s-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh. Ammā baʿd!
Declaring both wiping over the bandage and performing tayammum as simultaneously obligatory is incorrect. This goes against the principles of the Shari‘ah, as it is not from the way of the religion to make two separate purification methods obligatory for the same limb at the same time.
Shar‘i Ruling:
- If a limb is injured and covered with a bandage, then wiping over the bandage is sufficient.
- Tayammum is only legislated when:
✔ Using water will cause harm, or
✔ Delivering water to the wound is detrimental.
There is no precedent in the Shari‘ah for making two acts of worship obligatory at the same time for the same cause.
Allah ﷻ does not make two separate acts of worship mandatory upon a person for one single reason.
