Is all seafood halal?

Animals of the sea that by nature live only in water are, in principle, lawful to eat.

A hadith states that Abu Hurayrah reported that the Messenger of Allah said regarding the sea:
“The water of the sea is purifying, and its dead (animals) are lawful.” [Sunan Abi Dawud 83]
Shaykh al-Albani declared this narration authentic in Sahih Abi Dawud.

The general rule concerning sea creatures is that any animal that cannot live without water is not prohibited to eat. As for animals that are capable of living both on land and in water, not all of them are lawful.
