Hadith on Adhan and Iqamah for Eid

"I prayed both Eid prayers with the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) more than once or twice, and there was no Adhan and no Iqamah."
(Reported by Muslim: 887)
Key Lessons from the Hadith
➊ There Is No Adhan or Iqamah for Eid Prayers
- The Eid prayers (Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha) do not require Adhan or Iqamah.
- The word "Eidain" refers to both Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha, which recur annually—hence they are called "Eidain" (the two Eids).
- This Hadith clearly states that the Prophet (ﷺ) never performed Adhan or Iqamah for Eid prayers.
➋ The Concept of Eid in Islam
- Islam has only two prescribed Eids, where all Muslims gather to perform a special prayer and supplications.
- It is incorrect to introduce any other Eid in Islam.
➌ The Comparison Between Eid and Jumu'ah
- Jumu'ah (Friday) is also considered an Eid for Muslims, but it is a weekly obligatory prayer, unlike the annual Eid prayers.
- However, despite its significance, Jumu'ah has Adhan, while Eid does not.
➍ Adhan Is Required Only for Obligatory Daily Prayers
- Adhan is required only for the five daily obligatory prayers which are performed regularly.
- Eid prayer, being occasional, does not require Adhan or Iqamah.
- Janazah prayer is another exception—it is a collective obligation (Fard Kifayah) but does not have Adhan or Iqamah either.
Conclusion: No Adhan or Iqamah for Eid Prayers
- Eid-ul-Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha do not require Adhan or Iqamah.
- Only the five daily obligatory prayers have Adhan and Iqamah.
- Jumu'ah prayer has Adhan but Eid does not.
