Is Abortion Allowed Due to the Risk of AIDS in the Fetus?

Ruling on Abortion Due to Risk of AIDS Infection

Authored by: Saudi Fatwa Committee (Lajnah al-Dā'imah)

Question:

What is the ruling on abortion in the case where there is a strong likelihood that the fetus may be infected with the AIDS virus?

Answer:

Abortion is not permissible.
Indeed, the mere possibility that the fetus may be infected with the AIDS virus does not make abortion lawful.

Therefore, the Saudi Fatwa Committee advises the woman and her husband to have good expectations from Allah and to supplicate to Him that He protect the woman and her fetus from all forms of harm.

Wa bi-llāhi al-tawfīq (And success is from Allah).
