❀ Psychological or Physical Illness as a Valid Excuse for Refusal ❀

This article is derived from the book “500 Questions and Answers for Women” based on the fatwas of the scholars of the Haramain, translated by Hafiz Abdullah Saleem.
If a wife, due to a severe psychological condition or painful illness, refuses her husband's request to come close to her,
will she be sinful in doing so?
When a husband calls his wife to his bed, it is normally obligatory for her to respond.
However, if she is genuinely unable to fulfill this request due to a psychological or physical illness, then:
✔ It is not permissible for the husband to make such a demand in that condition.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
"لا ضرر ولا ضرار"
[Narrated by Ibn Mājah in Kitāb al-Aḥkām 17 and Aḥmad ibn Ḥanbal 5/327]
“There should be neither harm nor reciprocating harm.”
Therefore, the husband should refrain from making such a demand and should instead seek fulfillment through a means that causes no harm.
