Question:
Can a non-maḥram (non-relative) carry the body of a deceased woman or help lower her into the grave? Is it necessary for the person burying her to be a maḥram?
Answer by:
Shaykh ʿAbd al-Wakīl Nāṣir (ḥafiẓahullāh)
Sharʿī Guidelines:
① On Carrying and Lowering the Body:
- Islam does not require the one who carries or lowers a deceased woman into the grave to be a maḥram (close male relative).
- If maḥram male relatives are available, it is preferable to give them precedence.
- However, this is not a binding condition in Sharīʿah.
② In the Absence of Maḥārim:
- If no maḥram is present, any suitable person may carry the bier or help lower the body into the grave.
- This action is permissible and carries no objection in Islamic law.
③ Islamic Principle:
- The primary goal in matters related to a woman’s funeral is to ensure respect, dignity, and honor are maintained.
- Unnecessary restrictions or complications are not imposed by Sharīʿah in this regard.
