Question:
I have a black dog, so is it a devil? If it is a devil, is it permissible for me to kill it?
Answer:
It is narrated from Abu Qilabah (رضی اللہ عنہ) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
لولا أن الكلاب أمة من الأمم لأمرت بقتلها ولكن خفت أن أبيد أمة، فاقتلوا كل أشود بهيم، فإنها جنها أو من جنها
"If dogs were not a community among the communities, I would have ordered their killing, but I fear the extinction of a nation. Therefore, kill every pure black dog, for it is either a devil or one of the devils."
[Sahih Muslim, Hadith Number 1572]
Yes, this is considered a devil, and it is permissible to kill it by poisoning it, as it is necessary to purify homes from dogs.
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Talhah (رضی اللہ عنہ) that indeed the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said:
لا تدخل الملائكة بيتا فيه كلب ولا صورة
"Angels do not enter a house where there is a dog, nor a house with a picture."
[Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith Number 3225]
However, hunting dogs and those kept for protection are exceptions under two conditions:
① The dog should not be a pure black one with two marks (on its eyes), as it is considered a devil.② It should be kept outside the house, and not allowed to enter inside.
